Spotlight on Reconciliation - Indigenous Place Names & Land Back

On of the Ways to Reconcile with Indigenous People - Dos Pueblos Ranch, named after two Chumash villages Mikiw & Cuyamu.

It is often referred to as the place "where California was born."

Each week in 2026 we spotlight one way to walk on the path of healing with Indigenous People. This week we focus on Researching Indigenous Place Names & Land Back Movement.

The Northern Chumash Tribal Council is currently in escrow to acquire Dos Pueblos Ranch and Institute.

This land is sacred to the Chumash people, who have lived along this coast for thousands of years. Preserving and sustaining Dos Pueblos Ranch under tribal stewardship is a once-in-a-multi-generation opportunity to restore our relationship with the land, honor our ancestors, and carry forward a powerful legacy of environmental education, cultural revitalization, and conservation.

Situated on the Gaviota Coast just north of Santa Barbara, Dos Pueblos holds significant cultural, historical and environmental importance in California. Initially inhabited by the Indigenous Chumash, it is often referred to as the place "where California was born." The name Dos Pueblos refers to the two Chumash villages, Mikiw & Cuyamu, situated on either side of what is now Dos Pueblos Creek. It also marks the southern boundary of the new Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary.

Want to help? You can donate to the cause of Returning Sacred Coastal Land to Tribal Stewardship for Cultural, Educational & Environmental Renewal.

The Horse is commonly associated with:

  • Freedom & Independence: Horses thrive when they can move fast and follow their own path. This year favors self-expression and personal ambition.

  • Energy & Action: Expect a faster pace. The Horse doesn’t sit still for long, making this a great year to take initiative.

  • Confidence & Charisma: Horse years often spotlight leadership, social connections, and being seen or heard.Run before 8 AM or after 6 PM to avoid peak heat

CA Rare Fruit Growers Scion Exchange Saturday, February 28th at Cal Poly

Annual Scion Exchange... With Grafting Demonstrations!
This is our Chapter's biggest single event, free to members of our chapter and the public. It is held on the forth Saturday of February and takes place at the Crops Unit, a large building on the Cal Poly campus.

At the scion exchange you will find rows of tables laden with bags of scion wood from a wide variety of trees. Attendees are invited to select and take home scions to graft to their own fruit trees, and to bring scions to share.

You will also find demonstrations by experienced grafters who will demonstrate various grafting techniques. These volunteers are members of CRFG and will do their best to answer all your grafting questions!

We also sell rootstock, grafting tape, budding tape, grafting "goop," grafting knives, and pheromone loops for control of the Codling moth.

That’s it for this week.

Keep showing up, keep cheering each other on — and as always, remember We Are All Part of One Global Family!
